Thursday night leagues

As many of you now know, the men’s and women’s leagues we had organised for Thursday nights this summer have had to be cancelled due to a lack of attendance.

The fields have, however, already been booked and paid for. Since we are refunding the fees paid for those leagues, WDS has a significant financial gap in its books. To try and make use of the fields, and to help promote the development of ultimate in Wellington, Jonathan Aumonier-Ward (Jaws) has offered to organise a 5 week long mixed 7 a side league.

REMINDER - U19s open day this Saturday

New Zealand Ultimate is hosting a series of regional youth ultimate development days. The purpose of these youth events is to provide new players with the basic skills needed to play the sport, and to extend the skills of those young people who are already keen Ultimate players.  These events also mark the start of New Zealand Ultimate’s programme to send a boys and girls team to the World Junior Ultimate Championships in August 2012.

Deliberate Dangerous Behavior Alleged

On Tuesday 29 November, in the game between SPY and Aslan's Army, a serious incident occurred where deliberate dangerous behaviour is alleged. A player was hurt and required a precautionary trip to the hospital. We wish them a speedy and full recovery.

New Zealand Under 19 Ultimate boys and girls teams faced Australia

At the beginning of October the two NZ U19 teams faced off against the Australian U19 in the first ever Trans-Tasman U19s Championship.  The players have spent the last six months training hard and it was exciting to see each team come together to represent their country in an exciting three game series.

Both teams coped with the wet and windy conditions admirably with some games going to universe point.

Kahu, the NZ U19 girls, and Katipo, the NZ U19 boys, both put on an impressive show and each team took the series in a clean sweep 3-0.

NZU Mixed Ultimate Champs - looking for a TD!

NZU is looking for a Tournament Director for New Zealand Mixed Ultimate Championships.

Volunteer wanted: Design of 2012 indoor leagues

WDS faces a number of choices about the design of the 2012 indoor leagues.  We have considerably more court space (because of the opening of the ASB Community Sports Centre at Cobham Drive) and have made a number of changes to the summer leagues which might also be relevant to the indoor season. We're looking for someone to work through these choices, and to consult other players about their preference.  The Leagues' Committee will provide advice and support for the work.

New Zealand Under 19 Ultimate boys and girls teams to face Australia

This weekend at Parr’s Park in West Auckland, the New Zealand Under 19 Ultimate boys and girls teams will face off against the Australian Under 19 teams in the first ever tournament of its kind.

This series is the culmination of New Zealand Ultimate’s 2011 Juniors programme, which NZU launched in March of this year.  The long term goal of the programme is to promote the sport within this younger age group and there is serious consideration being given to attempt to send the Under 19 teams to the World Under 19 Championships in 2012.

College Sport Wellington give Wellington Disc Sports $16,000 for their 'Ultimate in Schools' Programme

In April 2011 College Sport Wellington offered Wellington Disc Sports $16,000 for their 'Ultimate in Schools' Programme. This money is going towards putting Ultimate players from the community into schools to help promote, coach and train students. As well as money Sport Wellington has announced Ultimate as a sanctioned Sport to all secondary schools in the area. From this movement the Schools Programme, initiated by WDS, has received a wide range of interest and is currently in the process of organising a structure that will enable College Ultimate to grow in Wellington.

Summer Leagues Registration Open

Leagues Consultation Results

The results of the consultation on the format for the 2011/2012 outdoor leagues can be found here.

Ultimate in the schools

Hello WDS ultimate community,

Lately we have been revitilising the schools system and it is going better than ever. What we now need is for enthusiastic people to go into local schools and help run P.E. classes. This would mean going into schools during P.E. time and coaching.

We also need fellow Ultimate players to help coach in the schools league. At the moment we have been going into many schools that are interested in having a team but they have no-one who can coach the kids once they are hooked.

New Leagues Coordinator for Summer 2011/12

Vic Johns will be taking over as the Leagues Coordinator for the Summer 2011/2012 Leagues.

She will be in charge of everything related to these leagues. Clubs and captains will be receiving an email from her announcing the opening of registration soon.
